Tax season is a prime time for scammers to take advantage of unsuspecting individuals and businesses. From fake IRS calls to phishing emails, tax scams can be convincing and cost victims hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Here are some of the most common tax scams to watch out for:

  1. Fake IRS calls: Scammers may call claiming to be from the IRS and demand immediate payment for outstanding taxes or threaten arrest or legal action. The IRS does not make unsolicited calls, so if you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, hang up and report the call to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA).
  2. Phishing emails: Scammers may send fake emails claiming to be from the IRS, requesting personal and financial information. Always be wary of unsolicited emails, and do not click on any links or attachments without verifying the source first.
  3. Return preparer fraud: Some tax preparers may falsify information on returns to increase their clients’ refunds, which can result in fines, penalties, and even criminal charges. Choose a reputable tax preparer, and be sure to review and understand your return before signing and submitting it.

At LC Tax & Document Service, we are dedicated to helping our clients navigate the tax process and protect themselves from tax scams.
